Choose Time-Sert When:
- Repairing aluminum cylinder heads or engine blocks
- Application involves high vibration or thermal cycling
- Permanent repair is required (no future removal)
- Maximum thread strength is critical
- Spark plug thread repair in aluminum heads
- Previous Helicoil repair has failed
Choose Helicoil When:
- Cost is a primary consideration
- Required size is unavailable in Time-Serts
- General purpose thread repair needed
- Working with steel or cast iron
- Low vibration environment

Real-World Performance
Independent testing has demonstrated that Time-Sert inserts provide superior pullout strength compared to helical wire inserts in aluminum castings. Testing found Time-Sert inserts could withstand forces exceeding the yield strength of the parent material.
While Helicoil inserts perform adequately for many applications, Time-Sert's mechanical locking mechanism provides measurably higher resistance to pullout forces and vibration-induced loosening, particularly in soft metals like aluminum.
Note: A Helicoil repair is still "Stronger than original thread". This is partly due to the fact that it is larger in outer diameter than the original and this innately holds better. Also it acts like a "cushion" in the thread.
Cost Considerations
Initial Cost
Time-Sert kits require a higher initial investment due to the additional counterbore tool and precision-manufactured inserts. Each kit includes drill, counterbore, tap, and installation tool.
Helicoil kits are generally less expensive and only require a drill, tap, and installation tool.
Long-Term Value
Time-Sert's permanent installation eliminates repeat repairs and provides peace of mind in critical applications. The superior strength and vibration resistance justify the higher cost for professional applications.
Helicoil provides excellent value for general purpose repairs where maximum strength is not critical and offers a much wider range of sizes than the Time-Sert
