RPM & Surface Finish

Essential information about RPM settings and achieving optimal surface finishes with Flex-Hone tools

What RPM Should You Use for Flex-Hones?

Proper RPM settings are critical for achieving optimal results with Flex-Hone tools. Use the recommended RPM ranges below based on your Flex-Hone diameter.

Flex-Hone DiameterSuggested RPM
4mm to 1/2" (4mm to 13mm)800 to 1200
1/2" to 2" (13mm to 50mm)700 to 900
2" to 4" (50mm to 100mm)600 to 800
4" to 8" (100mm to 200mm)400 to 600
8" to 12" (200mm to 300mm)300 to 500
12" to 18" (300mm to 450mm)80 to 350
19" to 36" (480mm to 960mm)60 to 120

Important Notes

  • These are suggested RPM ranges. Always start at the lower end of the range and adjust as needed.
  • Larger diameter Flex-Hones require slower speeds to prevent damage and achieve optimal results.
  • Always use proper lubrication when operating Flex-Hone tools.
  • Never operate a Flex-Hone outside of the workpiece at high speed.

Flex-Hones are Low RPM Tools

The RPM you will use depends mainly on the diameter of the Flex-Hone and also on what your application is. The table above is only a guide. You will need to work out what suits your requirements by experiment.

The smaller the hone, the faster the speed. The larger the hone, the slower the speed

Stroke Rate

The number of times you plunge in and out per second or "stroke rate" is only important if you need to create a cross hatch pattern. As a guide with Flex-Hones 125mm diameter or less start at 1 stroke per second then speed up or slow down the rate to get your selected cross hatch angle. The video "How to use a Flex-Hone and choose the right size for your job" demonstrates general use including stroke rates, etc.

What Surface Finish Can You Expect from Flex-Hones?

Surface finish table showing grit sizes and likely finish ranges

The chart above is only intended to offer a starting point in selecting grits. Because type of material and original finish can differ widely from job to job, the only real way to determine what works for you on a particular job is by actual trial and measurement. If your starting surface has a coarse finish you may need to use a range of Flex-Hones with progressively finer grits before you get to the finish you require.
